The oceanographer Carlos M. Duarte, Awardee of the Margalef Ecology Prize 2019

The biologist and oceanographer Carlos M. Duarte has been awarded the Ramón Margalef Prize in Ecology. Born in Lisbon but of Spanish nationality, he is considered one of the most influential researchers in the field of marine ecology and biological oceanography.
 
Valued by the jury as "an ecologist deeply committed to communicating scientific discoveries to a wider audience and emphasizing ocean solutions to some of the most important environmental problems of this century," he has contributed greatly to our understanding of the oceans from a holistic and integrative perspective, of the environmental problems that threaten them, and over the last years he has been fighting to break some of the myths prevailing in the rhetoric about climate change, aiming that the measures that are taken are effective and are built on the available scientific knowledge.
 
Since 2004, the Ramón Margalef Ecology Prize is dedicated to distinguishing researchers from all over the world who contribute to advance in the field of Ecology. It is awarded in honor of the memory of Professor Ramon Margalef (Barcelona, ​​1919-2004), an internationally recognized ecologist for his valuable contribution to the development of modern ecology.
