Friday 5 th November 2021

Dr. Jordi Bascompte i Sacrest has been awarded the 2021 Ramon Margalef Award for Ecology, one of the most prestigious international distinctions in the field of Ecology. The jury of these international awards, granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya since 2004, has highlighted with this award the research and teaching work of Jordi Bascompte, who is currently a Professor of Ecology at the University of Zurich.

The main scientific interest of Dr. Jordi Bascompte is the study of the structure and dynamics of ecological networks, considering the mutually beneficial interactions between plants and animals in the theory of community ecology, a field historically dominated by the perspective of the predation and competition.

Among other things, the jury highlighted "his extraordinary talent for selecting questions that can be addressed with data of sufficient quality to reach solid theoretical conclusions".

His research combines mathematical modeling, simulations, and data analysis to solve questions in fundamental and applied ecology. Some of his books have become valuable references that establish bridges between natural history and the theory of community ecology.

The award ceremony will be held at the Palau de la Generalitat (Barcelona) on November 9th for both Dr. Jordi Bascompte and last year's awardee, Dr. Sandra Lavorel, who could not receive the award due to the COVID-9 situation.
