25 state scientific societies, including SIBECOL, and 1,109 scientists and researchers from the Iberian Peninsule warn about the future of Doñana

Through a manifesto, supported by an unprecedented number of scientists, the world of science in Spain takes a position on the new proposal for the legalization of crops in the surroundings of the Doñana National Park and on the future of the natural area.

A total of 25 state scientific societies that are part of the Group of Scientific Societies for the Conservation of Natural Heritage (SOCINAT), together with 1,109 researchers and scientists in the field of biodiversity and geodiversity, have signed a manifesto in favor of the protection of Doñana and against the legalization of crops in the surroundings of the national park.
This manifesto explains that the information on the evolution of the different hydrogeological, hydrological and biological parameters of Doñana deriving from multiple studies carried out in recent decades, leaves no room for doubt about the deterioration of the national park. Therefore, it claims that the model of territorial planning and management in the area must be reconsidered, the threats that hover over this natural space must be remedied and any increase in the area under irrigation must be avoided.

The manifesto, with unprecedented support in the field of Spanish science, points out that there are already harmful effects on the ecosystem and lists important changes in the distribution of plant communities, disappearance of plants, significant negative trends in threatened bird species and in those organisms dependent on aquatic habitats, such as dragonflies, fish, amphibians, reptiles and a long etcetera, which are seriously degrading the biodiversity of the national park. Likewise, the document points out that the resilience of the ecosystem has already been seriously affected and that the trend will worsen and become irreversible if the causes of the drastic change that Doñana and its surroundings are undergoing are not controlled. For this reason, they regret that the Parliament of Andalusia has given the green light to the processing of a plan to modify the irrigated areas around Doñana and increase the legal surface for irrigation, despite the opposition of the State Government, the basin organization, environmental, social and political organizations, as well as many of the affected farmers and warnings from international organizations.

Faced with this situation, the signing scientific societies and researchers from different fields of science state that the global pressures facing Doñana are alarming and unsustainable, that any increase in the irrigated area poses a threat that ignores the scientific evidence, and that the legislation presents sufficient tools, which must be applied, to stop the deterioration to which the Doñana National Park is subjected.
